If the United States government is a massive machine, then Donald Trump is the man dedicated to putting on a pair of mechanic overalls and changing it up. Donald Trump campaigned in 2016 on the idea of draining the swamp, subverting the establishment, and transforming the political process toward the will of the people. While much of this talk was typical political chatter, some of it has already come to fruition. Upon taking up the Oval Office, President Trump got to work immediately by making high-profile appointments of outsiders to key positions. Chief among these political outsiders is Betsy DeVos, a devout reformer from the state of Michigan. As one of President Trump’s earliest ‘outsider appointments‘, DeVos has been tasked with setting a tone and following through. While President Trump put his faith into his appointment, many people don’t recognize her on a national level so let’s take a moment to learn about her.
Betsy DeVos was born and raised in a small town in Western Michigan. From Holland, MI, DeVos grew up in a small Dutch community where she formulated much of her worldly outlook based on her faith, her family, and her education. DeVos would work for her father’s automobile company before attending Calvin College. At Calvin College, DeVos would become familiar with Milton Friedman’s writings on the concept of school choice. School choice, sometimes tucked under the label of the ‘voucher system’, argues against government intervention and for parental freedom in the pursuit of knowledge. DeVos became passionate about this subject and she has spent much of her life focusing on advancing it around the nation.
After graduating Calvin College and marrying Dick DeVos, Betsy would be introduced to the political world in proper fashion. Dick DeVos would have an unsuccessful Michigan Governor’s bid in 2006 but their name would get out there all of the same. Since then, DeVos has taken up two charities for school choice and she has even operated as the Michigan Republican Chairwoman for the past five years or so. All of this work put Betsy DeVos on the map and it served as a hook to bring Donald Trump knocking on her door.
As the Secretary of Education in the Department of Education, DeVos will be charged with dealing with some of the most steadfast and veteran political figures in the United States government. As a newcomer, DeVos will have to prove herself almost immediately in order to stave off criticism of her work. DeVos knows that she has something to prove, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at her. Republican former state AG Mike Cox has called DeVos someone who is confident, focused, and even-keeled in their approach to the political machinations of the government. Cox went on to call her intimidating, pointing out that it had nothing to do with her billionaire status. If DeVos wants to succeed in passing her agenda through the steely gates of Washington D.C., she’ll have to stick to these traits in order to prosper.
